Abstract
This study examines the regional distribution patterns and chronological changes of iron arrowheads based on an analysis of a total of 2,727 specimens recovered from burial sites in the Mahan–Baekje region. The study area is divided into six regions: the middle– lower Han River basin, the southern Gyeonggi–inland Chungcheong region, the Chungc- heong western coastal region, the Mangyeong River basin, the Yeongsan River basin, and the southern Jeonnam coastal region. For typological analysis, iron arrowheads are classi- fied into stemless (tangless), socketed, and tanged types based on the presence or absence of a tang and the planar shape of the blade. Chronological phases are divided into four major stages and six sub-phases based on site contexts and associated grave goods. During Phase I, iron arrowheads were mainly deposited in burials concentrated in the Anseong and Gokgyo Stream basins. In Phase II, new centers of deposition emerged in the middle–lower Han River basin and the Cheongju area of the middle Geum River region, alongside existing core areas. From Phases III-1 to III-2, iron arrowhead deposition ex- panded outward from these centers, showing high concentrations in the middle–lower Han River basin and the middle Geum River region, while deposition spread to the middle– lower Namhan River region and the Chungcheong western coastal region; within this pro- cess, core areas were reorganized, including a shift in focus from downstream to midstream areas in the Han River basin and intensified concentration around Cheongju, alongside the formation of new centers in the Mangyeong and Yeongsan River basins. From Phases IV-1 to IV-2, iron arrowhead deposition in the central–western region gradually declined and came to an end, whereas deposition became increasingly concentrated and expanded within the southwestern region, particularly in the Yeongsan River basin. These regional developmental processes are interpreted as reflecting a shift from individualized deposition of iron arrowheads centered on Mahan polities in Phase I, through the formation of core deposition centers associated with the Mokji polity during Phases II and III-1, to the out- comes of Baekje’s full-scale territorial expansion from Phase III-2 through Phase IV.
