Abstract
This study re-examines the origin and early lineages of the “slender bronze dagger" based on firsthand observations of actual specimens. The existing Liaoning-origin his study re-examines the origin and early lineages of the “slender bronze dagger” hypothesis has relied mainly on similarities in blade outline, selected associated artifacts, and the historical account of Qin Kai’s eastward advance. However, it does not sufficiently explain the continuity of manufacturing techniques or the assembly structure of the blade, hilt, and pommel fitting. This study therefore reassesses the criteria for identifying forma- tive-stage slender bronze daggers by focusing on observable production features, including the tip section, central ridge and blade planes, constrictions and transverse ridges, tang–hilt assembly, pommel fitting attachment, central-ridge grinding, and sectional grinding. The analysis suggests that formative-stage slender bronze daggers were not transmit- ted through a single external lineage. Rather, they emerged through the coexistence and sequential convergence of multiple production traditions within the Korean Peninsula, together with the selective incorporation of external elements. Within the current body of evidence, the Hari specimen may be reevaluated as a candidate for one of the earliest for- mative-stage slender bronze daggers. The Sangjapori-type slender bronze dagger reflects the continuation of the Mandolin-shaped bronze dagger tradition, while the Dongseori-type slender bronze dagger shows the incorporation of stone dagger grinding techniques into bronze dagger production. The Seonje-ri and Wonjang-dong specimens indicate the coexis- tence of Mandolin-shaped bronze dagger and slender bronze dagger elements around the time when typical slender bronze dagger attributes became established. Thus, the formation of the slender bronze dagger can be understood as a gradual pro- cess combining the reorganization of internal production systems, the standardization of structure, grinding, and assembly, and the selective incorporation of external elements.
