Abstract

This study re-examines the origin of early mound tombs (Bungumyo) on the western coast of the Korean Peninsula by analyzing the recent archaeological findings from his study re-examines the origin of early mound tombs (Bungumyo) on the western Tomb No. 1 at Huogaidingling, Guangzhou, China. Previously, the widely accepted “Jiang- nan earth mound tomb (Todun) origin theory” faced a crucial limitation: the highly formal- ized square surrounding ditch (jugu) combined with a pre-built above-ground mound - a core feature of early Mahan tombs - was rarely identified in the lower reaches of the Yang- tze River. However, Tomb No. 1 at Huogaidingling, constructed during the Western Han Nanyue Kingdom period, clearly demonstrates the cultural integration of the Qin dynasty’s “sur- rounding ditch” concept with the indigenous Yue tradition of “earth mound” construction. This tomb reveals a unified process of “zoning and earth-borrowing,” where the earth ex- cavated from the rectangular ditch was directly utilized to build the central mound. This structural conception, along with the independent distribution of a single burial, exhibits a high degree of structural similarity to the early mound tombs of the Mahan period. Consequently, this paper argues that the burial concepts from the southern coast of China were introduced to the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula via dynamic maritime exchange networks around the 3rd to 2nd centuries BCE. Rather than a direct physical replication, these introduced concepts underwent a unique indigenization process by integrating with local material traditions, as evidenced by the deposition of indigenous attached-rim pottery in place of southern Chinese geometric stamped ceramics. By supple- menting the crucial missing link of the “surrounding ditch,” this study logically reconstructs the maritime transmission model of early mound tombs in East Asia.
