Abstract

Lee-seong Fortress, in Sejong, is a mountain fortress constructed on the summit of a mountain, situated centrally within the northern region of Baekje during the Sabi period. This area served as a strategic zone of intense contention among the Three Kingdoms during the Ungjin and Sabi periods. Recent excavations have garnered significant attention due to the identification of major archaeological features alongside artifacts from both Baekje and Silla. This study examines the chronology and characteristics of the excavated artifacts and elucidates the status and nature of Lee-seong Fortress by comparing them with settlement patterns in the northern Sabi region. Among the artifacts, Baekje Sabi pottery exhibits considerable diversity; a majority dis- play key typologies and manufacturing techniques characteristic of the Sabi Capital. Regard- ing roof tiles, a partial influence of Goguryeo elements is observed in the motifs of convex roof-end tiles and joining techniques, alongside distinct characteristics of tiles produced in the northern region during the Sabi period. The primary chronology for the Baekje artifacts is estimated to be the early 7th century, while the Silla artifacts date centrally to the mid- 7th century. Consequently, it is inferred that Lee-seong was constructed by Baekje between the late 6th and early 7th centuries. Leveled terraces were established on the northeastern summit within the fortress, accommodating a dodecagonal building, a rectangular building, and wooden storage facilities (mokgwak-go). Subsequently, around the mid-7th century, Silla appears to have reoccupied the fortress, resulting in modifications such as the reuse of ex- isting structures and the reconstruction of water collection systems. Sejong’s Lee-seong Fortress was a fortification constructed centrally within the Asan- Cheonan and Sejong-southwestern Cheongju areas, which are regions where stable gover- nance was challenging due to continuous conflict among the Three Kingdoms during the Baekje Sabi period. Given the presence of significant architectural features, such as the po- lygonal building, and numerous artifacts transported from the capital, including inkstones, the site is interpreted as an administrative center or a facility serving administrative func- tions during the late Sabi period.
