Abstract

This study investigates the hierarchy and defense system of fortresses distributed in the Liaohe River basin, which served as the front-line of Goguryeo’s defense against China his study investigates the hierarchy and defense system of fortresses distributed in the during the 6th and 7th centuries, through an analysis of archaeological attributes. Previous research on the defense system of the Liaohe River basin has tended to be limited to spe- cific regions or focused on the Cheolli Wall (Thousand Li Wall). Furthermore, existing studies on the hierarchy of Goguryeo fortresses have predominantly relied on historical documen- tary records. In this study, the hierarchy of fortresses was classified into three levels corresponding to the local administrators recorded in literature: Yoksal-level fortresses, Cheoryeogeun- ji-level fortresses, and Garadal/Nucho-level fortresses. Attributes such as fortress size, topo- graphic location, and the presence of roof-tiled building sites were utilized as analysis in- dicators. The analysis identified 3 Yoksal-level fortresses, 7 Cheoryeogeunji-level fortresses, and 10 Garadal/Nucho-level fortresses within the Liaohe River basin. The routes of advance from the Liaohe River basin toward the Goguryeo capital are classified into routes following the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the river. The Yoksal-level fortresses (i. e., Fushun Goisanseong, Liaoyang Yodongseong, and Gaizhou Goryeo- seongsanseong) are situated on these three key transportation routes leading to the capital. Surrounding these are the Cheoryeogeunji-level and Garadal/Nucho-level fortresses, col- lectively forming three defensive zones. These zones constituted a frontline equipped with a mutual support system, performing a pivotal role in the defense of Goguryeo’s western front.
