Abstract

This study aims to investigate how an employee’s family structure is linked to work-related outcomes. Guided by the work-home resources model and social role theory, we propose a home-to-work enriching process model in which a home resource leads to work attitude changes through personal resources. Specifically, we posit that the relationships between being a married worker cohabitating with school-age or younger children and the enhancements of both organizational commitment and job satisfaction are serially mediated by time for family and subjective well-being. Using three waves of data involving 1,164 South Korean employees from the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study, we found support for these home-to-work enrichment processes. Furthermore, we found that the indirect relationships between being a married worker living with school-age or younger children and organizational commitment and job satisfaction enhancements were stronger for women than for men. Taken together, these findings have theoretical and practical implications for our understanding of family structure, work-home enrichment, and gender.
