Abstract

This paper investigates the adposition systems in Korean and Thai from comparative and grammaticalization perspectives. The two languages are genealogically and typologically distinct, but an analysis of the synchronic and diachronic patterns of the development of the two systems reveals a high level of commonality, which points to the universality of the human conceptual system. In contemporary adpositional systems, the two languages have rich inventories of grammatical case, locative case and non-locative case markers. With reference to the grammaticalization patterns, the two languages resort in common to the anthropomorphic model, exhibit contact-language influences, and recruit the mixed time-conceptualization model.
