Abstract
Koseong Unheungsa temple (雲興寺) was called Yongheungsa temple when Seok-ju Daesa (釋珠⼤師) rebuilt the western Seowon (西院) in 1624 after the Imjin Year War, and was renamed Unheungsa temple when he rebuilt the eastern Dongwon (東院) on the eastern hill (東丘) in 1683. The temple is well-known as a base temple (願刹) for naval monk soldiers during the Imjin War and is considered the main temple for the righteous monk army of that time. This historical connection is verified through records such as the Imjin War Memorial Records “Imjin Jeongmang Chukwon Yujeon (壬⾠戰亡祝願遺傳)”, which are housed at Unheungsa Temple, as well as accounts of visits by Admiral Yi Sun-sin. The rebuilding of the temple began in the 9th year of King Sukjong (1683) when the Daeungjeon hall was moved to a high hill to the east, and the temple had acquired the character of the main temple for the naval monk soldiers. Through numerous enshrining creations in the 18th century, Unheungsa Temple was revitalized after being destroyed during the Imjin War, and it eventually became one of the most prominent temples in the region. Currently, Unheungsa temple is a branch temple of Ssanggyesa temple, which is currently the 13th parish, and the current temple is maintained by the senior master monk, Kosan (杲⼭) Hye-won (慧元), and currently, the head monk of Ssanggyesa temple, the 13th parish headquarters, Yeong-dam, is in attendance, and Wol-am is serving as the head monk, and is carrying out a large-scale reconstruction project.
