Abstract
The Water-Moon Avalokitesvara Painting at Unheungsa Temple is a Buddhist painting masterpiece created in 1730 by a monk-painter Ui-gyeom at Daehwa-sa temple, widely known as the largest Water-Moon Avalokitesvara painting in Joseon. Ui-gyeom, who was the best head monk-painter of the time, created several large-scale Buddhist paintings, including Sakyamuni Yeongsanhoe Painting and 16 items of Eight Bodhisattvas in 1719, and created six large Buddhist paintings, including the Three-worlds Buddha Painting in Daeungjeon in 1730. Before this, after Ui-gyeom becoming a head monk-painter in 1719, his first work was the Yeongsan Painting or the Eight Bodhisattvas painting, which is significant, and over the following decades, he had been working on Buddhist paintings for Unheungsa Temple, establishing his special relationship with Unheungsa temple. The iconographic features of the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara Painting are closely related to the Gwaneum faith of Ui-sang, with figures of Sudhana and the daughter of the Dragon King, which reflects the distinctive features of the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara. Stylistically, it shows a more flexible and gentle appearance compared to other Water-Moon Avalokitesvara Paintings, and it utilizes light wash techniques that were also used in Sixteen Arhat Paintings of the time. This Water-Moon Avalokitesvara Painting is a rare example in Joseon era and, following that of Gyeongshin-sa Temple both in Goryeo and Joseon, it is the second largest masterpiece in the country, which further elevates its historical significance.
