Abstract
This study aimed to identify the characteristics of the icons and scientifically interpret the relationship between the monk-painter and the coloring materials by analyzing the five large Buddhist paintings(hanging paintings of Cheonggoksa Temple(1722), Anguksa Temple(1728), Unheungsa Temple(1730), Dabosa Temple(1745), and Gaeamsa Temple(1749)) produced in the 18th century by Uigyeom, a representative monk-painter of the late Joseon Dynasty. The five large Buddhist paintings produced by Uigyeom share a common feature of being symmetrically arranged around the Buddha at the center, but they show some differences in the composition and arrangement of the Bodhisattvas. In order to identify the colors and coloring materials used to express the paintings, Handheld XRF and digital microscope were used for non-destructive investigation focusing on the Buddha. Additionally, some collected pigment samples were precisely analyzed using XRD. The results showed that five large Buddhist paintings used red and green as the main colors and yellow and blue in sub colors. The lips of the Buddha, flaming halos, robes(大衣), and clothes(裙衣) were mainly used colored in red, and the skin of the Buddha was expressed in a yellow color closed to white, the mustache, head halo, and inner wears(覆肩衣) in green, and the linings of robes in blue. It was also found that cinnabar, minium, copper chloride, organic dye, Meok, and lead white were commonly used in the production of these paintings. While the head halo was colored in a single color using copper chloride, the red robes and flaming halos expressed a three-dimensional effect by mixing cinnbar and minium in different proportions or by applying the similar color once more. The blue lining of robes were mainly used organic dye indigo and lead white, rather than azurite. Therefore, the five large Buddhist paintings produced by Uigyeom reflect the development and continuation of previous Buddhist iconography and used a limited range of coloring materials, with the mixing and overlapping of pigments naturally expressing variations in light and darkness, thereby creating the various colors.
