Abstract
This study seeks to explore how political phenomena are differently remembered and represented through comparison of Vietnam War movies between South Korea and the United States. Dear Hunter(1978), The Apocalypse Now(1979), Born on the 4th of July(1989) of the United States and White Badge(1992), Al Point(2004), International Market(2014) of Korea are among the major analyses. The epic structure of hero formalized by J. Campbell(1947), which is called ‘Hero’s Journey,’ is used as a framework, considering the characteristics of the movie that revolves around the main characters. The main character, our hero, starts his adventure journey away from everyday life. He is faced with various difficulties, but with the help of a wise man or woman, he is able to overcome them, thereby building a new identity or a new world view, and return to the everyday world again. In the case of American cinema, this narrative structure fits well. The main characters face great difficulties by participating in the war, but with the help of others, they can get a opportunity for awakening. And then, they come back their home with a new identity. In Korean movies, however, the main characters of the movies do not have a new opportunity for reflective introspection, but rather are locked in the trauma of the war, or romanticize their tough past, putting the reality of the war under obliviscence. in Korean movies, unlike American ones, the Vietnam War disappears into oblivion and beauty. The reason why Korean movies seem different from American movies is because they have different perceptions of war. For Koreans, the Vietnam War was not ‘my’ war but ‘theirs’ war. Seemingly protecting liberal democracy was emphasized as the cause of war, but the practical reason was to make money for his country's economic development. That is why the memories of barbarism, fears and curses that had to be experienced in the war were regarded as something to have their just due for family prosperity and national economic development. The painful memories of the war, at a time of economic growth, are doomed to be glorified as beautiful experience, or forgotten uncomfortable memories, rather than as an occasion for reflective introspection.
