사범대학 영어 예비교사들의 외국어 학습에 대한 신념 연구

초록

이 논문은 영어교육을 전공하는 학부 학생들을 대상으로 외국어 학습에 대한 신념을 조사̇̇하고 분석한 것이다. 이를 위해 Horwitz(1988)의 설문지를 사용하여 학년이 올라감에 따라 신념의 변화가 있는가에 초점을 두고 분석하였다. 연구의 결과, 학생들의 신념은 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았으며 반복적 학습의 효과, 성인에 비해 어린이 학습자의 수월성, 어휘의 중요성 등에서 학년과 무관하게 공통된 신념을 드러내었다. 이와 같은 결과는 선행 연구들의 결과와 유사하며 신념의 변화가 쉽게 일어나지 않음을 보여주었다. 교사교육의 효과라는 관점에서 볼 때, 이 연구는 개인의 신념을 변화시키기 위해서는 단지 선언적 지식을 전달하는 방식이 아니라 지식을 체화할 수 있는 반성적 실천을 통해 자신의 사고와 신념을 이해하고 성찰하는 시간을 제공하는 것이 필수적이라는 함의를 제공한다.

Abstract

This paper reports on a study that examined the beliefs about learning a foreign language held by English education major students. The primary aim of the study was to see if there were differences in beliefs among the first year, third year, and fourth-year students. Data were collected using Horwitz’s (1988) Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory (BALLI). Statistically significant differences were not found except one item ‘English is a difficult language to learn.’ Findings suggested that the students of the department started out the teacher education program with several common beliefs about language learning and teaching such as the importance of repetitive practice, the superiority of children over adults, or the primacy of vocabulary and pronunciation over grammar. Considering that participants of this study were a very homogeneous group of students, such beliefs could reflect teaching practices they had experienced as learners of English. Results supported the view that teacher education has a limited effect on student teachers’ beliefs although a few of them seemed to change gradually from one year to the next. Future directions regarding the integration of reflective practice into teacher preparation courses were suggested.
