Abstract

People use many languages in addition to their mother tongues. In Korea, students learn English obligatorily in an elementary school and also learn a third language with English. Most Korean students are multilingual learners, who learn at least three languages(Korean, English, the third language such as Japanese, Chinese, French and German). Recently new models have been suggested, which reflect special characteristics of multilingual and the third language learning. These models distinguish existing bilingual models from second language learning ones qualitatively(age, motivation, metalinguistic knowledge, learning strategy of learners, interlanguage transfer and so on) as well as quantitatively. The purpose of this research is to analyze negative effects of English(L2) learning experiences and knowledge on German(L3) learning, focused on the interlingual transfer(German as Foreign language after English). Korean students usually have difficulty in pronouncing German which has the same spelling as English, but different phonetic values. They also have difficulty in learning German vocabulary which has similar forms to English vocabulary, but different meanings. From the diachronic view, German and English are derived from Proto-Indo-European language. While there are many similarities between the two languages, there are also many differences because of different historical transition. Above all, differences between the two languages cause Korean German learners to make mistakes. Therefore, analyzing negative effects of English on German learning systematically is meaningful for planning to teach and learn German as the third language after English.
