Abstract

This paper explores the intellectual and cultural contexts of early 20th-century Vienna within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, focusing on two influential figures—Alcide De Gasperi and Ludwig Wittgenstein— who, although from different disciplines, shared a formative background and moral vision that would later shape Europe’s political and philosophical trajectory. De Gasperi, a Catholic intellectual from Trentino, was educated in Vienna and developed a political vision based on Christian social ethics, later becoming a leading figure in post-World War II European integration through his leadership in the Italian Christian Democratic Party. Wittgenstein, meanwhile, emerging from Vienna's intellectual aristocracy, contributed foundational ideas in linguistic philosophy and ethics through works like the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Although no direct relationship or mutual reference between the two has been recorded, the paper investigates how both figures were shaped by the Christian ethical atmosphere and responsibility-oriented intellectual climate of Vienna. De Gasperi sought to politically institutionalize a Europe based on peace and human dignity, while Wittgenstein, through a rigorous investigation of language and ethics, revealed the moral conditions of meaningful communal life. Their concurrent presence in Vienna during a time of cultural crisis and philosophical upheaval points to deeper, structural interconnections between political action and philosophical reflection in the evolution of the European idea. This study argues that the European integration process, especially as envisioned by De Gasperi, was rooted not solely in economic necessity, but also in a normative political ideal grounded in Christian humanism. Simultaneously, Wittgenstein’s ethical philosophy, especially his emphasis on silence in the face of the ineffable, can be read as a reflection of the same cultural ethos that informed De Gasperi’s politics. The comparison ultimately reveals that the philosophical justification of postwar European unity rests not only on pragmatic consensus but also on a shared ethical foundation that traces back to the intellectual heritage of early 20th-century Vienna.
