Aspettate... Sesto!...)
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is twofold: (1) to investigate the ambivalence of operatic characters elicited by a discrepancy between music and text by means of music analysis; and (2) to examine character’s and, in particular, singer’s jouissance emanating from this ambivalence and voice, and discuss the way in which this influences the audience’s perception of opera. The present study analyzes the trio “Vengo... aspettate... Sesto!...” (No. 10) from Mozart’s opera La clemenza di Tito, KV. 621 (1791). It concludes by discussing Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s depiction of Vitellia in his 1980 film version of the opera.
