본 논문에서는 음악이 들려주는, 바꾸어 말하면 음악을 듣지 않고서는 접근할 수 없는 오페라 속 등장인물의 내면을 ‘음악분석’이라는 렌즈를 통해 들여다보고, 모차르트가 어떠한 방식으로 다 폰테의 대본, 보마르셰의 원작과는 또 다른 이야기를 풀어가는지 《피가로의 결혼》을 중심으로 살펴본다. 구체적으로는 음악형식 분석과 쉔커식 분석을 통해 음악적으로 드러나는 피가로의 감정이 가사를 통해 전달되는 그것과는 어떻게 다른지 비교해본다. 그리고 이러한 접근법과 오페라 연출의 상관 관계, 즉 오페라 연구의 이론과 실제에 대해 장 피에르 폰넬 감독이 1976년 영화판으로 제작한 《피가로의 결혼》의 연출 기법을 중심으로 살펴본다. 폰넬의 연출에서는 촬영 기법의 도움으로 두 명의 피가로가 한 화면에 함께 등장하는데, 이러한 연출이 음악분석과 해석에 미치는 영향, 그리고 음악분석과 해석이 연출에 어떤 가능성을 제공하는지 논의한다.
Abstract
The present study focuses on moments when music seems to say something that is not in harmony with what text expresses. This discrepancy between music and text suggests that Mozart tells us, through music (vocal or instrumental), the characters’ most private thoughts that are not revealed in the text alone. This paper proposes music analysis as a way into reading this unheard voices, and examines the way in which Mozart narrates his version of drama that is distinct from the librettist’s or the literary source on which his opera is based. I close by discussing the implications of such reading in stage direction, revisiting a scene from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s 1976 film-version of the opera.
