Abstract
This paper explores the meanings and roles of the textless songs in opera. For this purpose, thepaper examines three operas, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (K.620), Léo Delives'sLakmé, and Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly. As a result, the meanings and roles of thetextless songs in the three operas are as follows: the textless staccato phrase of the Königen derNacht's aria in the 2nd act of Die Zauberflöte, 'Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen,' has arole of emphasizing the singer’s virtuosity and her wrath; the textless melisma withoutinstrumental accompaniment of Lakmé in the 2nd act of Lakmé is used for the attention for asinging-scene inside of the opera; textless song without the body of the chorus in the 2nd act ofMadama Butterfly takes a role for expressing the inner voice (voci interne) of the protagonist. Finally, the paper suggests that the opera composers inserted the textless songs in operas to reflectcharacters, emotions, mental states, and atmosphere of the scene.
