Abstract

The present study examines the way in which Sesto and Vitellia express themselves through music in Mozart’s opera La clemenza di Tito, KV. 621 (1791) by means of music analysis. Specifically, it analyzes two rondò arias, a type known to convey the psychological state of characters in 18th-century operas. It considers the way in which Mozart reconstructs rondò aria and its dramatic meaning. This study argues three things. First, the psychological state of Sesto and Vitellia devised by the librettist Caterino Mazzolà is significantly different from that of the source by Pietro Metastasio. Second, Mozart was not unaware of these transfigurations and goes further to tell his own stories that may be distinct from those of Mazzolà’s and/or Metastasio’s. Such moment can be read in the music of rondò aria, through the formal analysis of which we will see that there emerges another drama where there is dissociation between the text and music. Last, the inner voice of Sesto and Vitellia spoken through music will be read in terms of anima and animus, concepts introduced by Carl Gustav Jung. The study concludes by discussing the implications of Jung’s concept in the analysis, stage direction, and the experiencing of opera.
