Abstract

Since postmodernism, the distinction between high-end fine art and pop culture has become ambiguous, and the boundaries of economy, politics and culture are blurring amid the global wave of capitalism. Against this backdrop, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between contemporary art and entertainment which seems to dominate everyday life and culture. The paper consists of two main stages. First, etymological and ideological genealogy related to the concept of entertainment is reviewed and the entertainment elements found in specific artworks are analyzed. This leads to a conclusion that embraces entertainment and coordinates the balance of art and entertainment or the desirable intersection between the two. In particular, Richard Shusterman’s pioneering reflection on entertainment is a major reference. The paradoxical structure of entertainment that encompasses serious maintenance and playful amusement, attention and diversion can be found in the process of approaching the history of concept. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to overcome the traditional narrow view of entertainment. It is followed by the arguments of leading entertainment critics who disparaged entertainment in the history of Western thought, such as Collingwood, Adorno, and Heidegger. Their comments confirm the limitations and weaknesses of entertainment. On the contrary, a review of claims of thinkers who defended entertainment reveals the aesthetic potential of entertainment. Based on this theoretical consideration, this paper analyzes the entertainment elements shown in Superflex’s ‘One Two Three Swing!’, Tomás Saraceno’s ‘In Orbit’ and ‘Arachnomancy.’ Through the analysis of these works, I emphasize the importance of paradoxical and productive dialectical structure of entertainment that Shusterman has mentioned.
