Abstract
This paper aims at exploring two alternative views on the Hirst's theory of liberal education, ie. internal and external alternative view. The former can be called 'an alternative for liberal education', whereas the latter can be called 'the alternative to liberal education'. Religious views of liberal education belong to 'an alternative for liberal education', while social practices view of education belongs to 'the alternative to liberal education'. Religious views of liberal education concern with justifying liberal education in terms of the cultivation of well-rounded mind through 'redeemed reason' and 'revelation' which are given by God's grace. Social practices view of education addresses the promotion of the life as a whole. So to speak, it emphasises the flourishing life which maximises the overall desires satisfaction in the long run of the people engaged in the social practices and also underlines practical reason and practical knowledge as its elements.
