허스트의 실천적 이성과 그 교육적 한계

초록

본 논문의 목적은 허스트의 후기 교육관의 핵심 개념인 실천적 이성의 성격은 무엇이고, 그 교육적 의의와 한계는 무엇인지를 밝히는 데 있다. 합리적 행위를 추론하는 실천적 이성은 추론자가 가지고 있는 실질적 선의 개념에 따라 탁월성 모델(사회적 실천의 내적 선의 추구)과 효과성 모델(욕구만족의 추구)로 구분될 수 있다. 탁월성 모델에서 실천적 이성은 사회적 실천의 내적 선의 구성 요소를 확인하고 이것을 달성할 행위를 추론하는 이성이다. 이에 반해 효과성 모델에서 실천적 이성은 자신의 욕구를 서열화하고 욕구를 효과적으로 충족할 행위를 추론하는 이성이다. 허스트의 실천적 이성은 효과성 모델에 가까운 것으로 판단되며, 교육적 관점에서 볼 때 허스트의 실천적 이성인은 도구적 이성인, 영리한 인간, 공동선에 무관심한 인간 등이 될 가능성이 있다. 이러한 난점으로부터 벗어나기 위해서는 실질적 선의 개념에 대한 인식 전환이 필요하다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to critically analyse the nature of Hirst's practical reason which plays a crucial role in his later view of education, and to suggest its educational implications. In order to achieve this goal, I divided practical reason into two models according to the substantive good which individuals pursue: the excellence model and the effectiveness model. The excellence model is a type of practical reason exemplified by those who act in pursuit of goods internal to social practices; The effectiveness model is a type of practical reason exemplified by those who seek to maximize the satisfaction of one's wants and needs. Both models have something in common in terms of a general conception of practical reason; an ability to inquire and choose rational actions in order to achieve a good. But the two models differ in terms of a mode of practical reasoning. In the excellence model practical reasoning involves identifying a good internal to a social practice to be pursued, and choosing the action most likely to secure that good under present conditions. In the effectiveness model practical reasoning involves ordering and ranking one's desires, then choosing the action most likely to maximize those desires. In light of the two models of practical reason, Hirst's practical reason seems to follow the effectiveness model. Therefore Hirst's practical reasoner may fall short of being an ideal type of educated person. That is, Hirst's practical reasoner may fall into the instrumental reasoner, the 'deinotes' person, and the person indifferent to common good. In order to overcome these shortcomings, Hirst's practical reasoner needs to understand him or herself not as a desire-bearing individual, but as a participant in a particular social practice.
