Abstract
It is well known that the modern forms of liberal education advanced by R. S. Peters and P. H. Hirst are the attempt to reestablish the classical conception of liberal education without invoking its metaphysical doctrine. A host of critical assessments have been made of this in reference to its significance and plausibility. Yet, one of the most central assessment criteria is to be found in the justifiability or unjustifiability of such modern liberal educationalists’ understandings of the metaphysical doctrine. It is argued that what lurks in their judgement that the Greek metaphysical doctrine is anachronistic is the issue of the subject-object dualism as one of the perennial problems for the Western philosophical tradition, and that this therefore requires us to revisit some critical scenes of Plato’s metaphysics, which is often regarded as one of the primal sources of the dualism. Heidegger’s reading of Plato’s allegory of the cave is informative in this regard, according to which, due to its ontotheological characteristics, Plato’s metaphysics is indeed open to charges of the dualism. Unlike the modern version of liberal education developed by Peters and Hirst, however, Heidegger’s critique of the ontotheological nature of Plato’s metaphysics is intended to lead us towards the way in which some non-human, transcendental dimension of education is more aptly preserved.
