우리말을 배우고 가르치는 노릇에는 다루어야 할 자료가 있어야 한다. 그 자료는 크게 두 가지다. 말[言語, language]과 말꽃[文學, literature], 곧 일상의 말과 예술의 말이다. 이 글은 이들 두 가지 가운데서 말꽃을 다루되, 우리말을 배우고 가르치면서 다루어야 할 말꽃송이[文學作品, literary works]를 어떻게 골라야 할지를 논의하는 것이다. 우리말을 배우고 가르치는 사람들이 말꽃송이 고르기를 걱정하기 비롯한 것은 새로운 세기로 넘어들던 때부터다. 그로부터 이미 꽤 많은 글을 썼고 책도 나왔지만, 우리 현실에 맞추어 차근차근 터전과 바탕을 마련하지 않고 뜬금없이 ‘정전(正典, canon)’을 들먹이며 서양 흉내에 열을 올리는 바람에 힘쓴 일이 현장에 보탬이 되지 않는다. 아무리 바빠도 차근차근 현실에 맞는 터전을 닦고 바탕을 마련하면서 우리말을 배우고 가르칠 적에 다루어야 할 말꽃송이를 올바로 고르는 길을 찾아야 한다. 이 글은 ‘말꽃송이 고르기를 해야 하는 까닭’에서부터 ‘말꽃송이 고르기에 앞서 짚어 둘 일’을 거쳐 ‘말꽃송이 고르기에 쓸 가늠자’까지 바탕이 되는 디딤돌을 놓아 보려고 했다. 앞으로 여러 사람이 함께 슬기를 모아 말꽃송이 고르는 길을 열어 나가면서 믿고 딛어도 좋을 디딤돌이 되기를 바란다.
Abstract
Suitable materials are a fundamental necessity in teaching and learning Korean. Educational materials are largely of two kinds: everyday texts that deal with ordinary language and works of literature that deal with artistic language. This paper discusses how to select suitable literary works when we choose literature for Korean language education. It was since the beginning of the new century that Korean language teachers began to be concerned about the selection of literary works. Numerous articles and books have been written on this topic, but almost all are impractical for actual classes because they have just been copying western ways of education by referring to canons without steadily establishing a foundation for selection conforming to our realities. What is needed is a systematic way to select works of literature for practical Korean language instruction. This paper establishes a basis for systematic selection by covering reasons for having to select literary works for teaching, what to consider before selecting, and selectional criteria. My aim is to open a way for selecting appropriate literary materials and thereby to lay reliable stepping stones for our collective instructional wisdom.
