Abstract
This research is focused on the topic how geography teachers are prepared in the Texas State and what geography teachers?s competences are. Geography education in the Texas State is now in difficulty because of the abolition of geography teacher?s certificate. Social Studies experience also the quality deterioration due to the increased number of Alternative Certified Teachers. The competencies for geography teachers are to have adequate subject-matter knowledge, to knowledge of how to teach it, to be funny, and to be enthusiastic. In the U.S. teaching hasn?t been regard as a professional one, and the relation between teacher demand and supply has been controlled by free market economy. Alternative teacher certification is a good example that the educational system is completely controlled by free market economy. It is misguiding educational policy and deteriorating the quality of educational service. Though the new certification examination TExES shows improved changes compared with EXcET, the abolition of geography teaching certification will be recorded as a big retrogression in field of geographic education in Texas. Basically, we believe, this inferior situation can?t be improved without change of perception of teaching and teacher.
