지리과 기능영역은 절차적, 수행적 성격을 갖는 방법적 지식으로 범주화될 수 있으며 지식기반 사회에서 추구하는 창의적 활용능력과 문제해결능력을 갖춘 지식의 구현에 적합한 부문으로서, 대안적 평가의 본격적인 도입과 관련하여 학습결과 중심의 평가가 지니는 문제점을 완화시키고 교사의 일방적 수업관행을 개선할 수 있다는 점에서 교육과정에서 중요하게 다루어져야 할 것이다. 국가교육과정 체제하에서 교육내용을 결정하는 것은 교육과정이라는 판단아래, 본 연구에서는 기능영역의 중요성을 강조하고 우리나라 및 영국의 지리과 국가교육과정과 미국의 지리과 표준에 제시된 기능영역의 내용을 고찰함으로써 우리나라의 지리과 기능영역에 주는 함의를 도출하고자 하였다. 우리나라 교육과정의 기능 영역은 제 6차 교육과정부터 다양한 기능과 학습자료가 제시되는 등 많은 개선이 이루어지고 있지만, 중등학교에서는 특정 학년의 특정 단원에 기능영역이 집중됨으로써 전 과정에 걸친 지속적인 학습이 여전히 어려운 상황이고 상대적으로 기능영역의 비중이 높은 초등학교에서도 교수·학습자료 및 기능 영역의 제시가 제한적인 것으로 나타났다. 영국과 미국의 교육과정은 기능영역에서 단계별 위계가 비교적 잘 나타나고 기능영역이 학습프로그램에서 큰 비중을 차지함에 따라 기능영역의 교수·학습이 활성화될 수 있도록 하고 있다.
Abstract
Geographical skill can be placed under the procedural knowledge category which has procedure and performance characteristics. Therefore, geographical skill as the procedural knowledge should be emphasized in the geography curriculum with the propositional knowledge which has been mainly focused. Geographical skill is also proper area in knowledge-based society which pursue the problem solving ability and the creative use. And the spread of performance assessment which focus on the assessment of the process of learning needs the geographical skill. Because some of the important objects of performance assessment are primarily geographical skill. Considering the influence of the national curriculum in Korea, we need to analyze the curriculum of geographical skill. Therefore, This study is to focus on the analysis of the Geography National Curriculum of Korea and England and the Geography National Standards of the United States to get some meaning for the organization of geographical skill in Korea.
