Abstract
The premodern East Asian interstate relations have often been approached using the framework of the tribute system model and historical perspectives of modern nation-states. However, such approaches diminish and simplify the greater world order that encompassed not only traditional East Asian states but also Inner Asian states such as Qara Khitai and Tibet. Comprehensive understanding of the premodern world order requires alternative frameworks and perspectives that enable us to rethink the still influential yet very problematic model of the tribute system. One way to overcome this Sinocentric and culturalistic framework of the tribute system is to turn our focus on the perspectives of the “peripheries.” Alternative theoretical frameworks include the “world-systems theory,” international Buddhist cultural sphere, and utilization of non-Chinese source materials. Through the process of application of these frameworks and interpretations, we may be able to appreciate a more comprehensive picture of the premodern Inner Asian interstate relations that have heretofore been obscured and distorted by the tribute system model.
