Abstract

All humans have fingerprints, but until recently, these had not been scientifically classified and studied. It was revealed in the 1880s that fingerprints could be used for personal identification since all people have a unique one. Fingerprint research has evolved through the collection of criminals’. However, there was another usage for fingerprinting. That was for human management. That kind of practice was first carried out in British colonial India to identify Indians, and came to be used by the Japanese Empire to manage labors in Manchuria. In post-war Japan, the fingerprinting of long-term foreign residents had been mandated since 1955, and was abolished in 1999. The previous studies on the fingerprinting in Japan have attempted to analyze Imperial Japan’s view of others through fingerprints, and that kind of view was reflected to the enforcement of fingerprinting in postwar Japan. However, they have lacked a discussion of Japanese fingerprints themselves. In prewar Japan, scientists accepted the idea as very ‘scientific’ that ethnicities could be distinguished through examining fingerprints, so the researches for Japanese fingerprints were conducted a large scale. In that time, fingerprints functioned as the representation of the so-called ‘Japanese race’. This article aims to analyze the Japanese Empire’s view of the body and perception of eugenics which could be seen through studying fingerprints.
