이 글에서 필자는 한국 근대문학의 형성 과정에 대한 보다 풍부한 논의를 위해서 근대문학과 낭만주의의 관계를 논의해 보고자 한다. 이 글에서 논의되는 바, 낭만주의는 문예사조로서의 낭만주의가 아니라 시대정신으로서의 낭만주의이다. 좀더 분명하게 말하자면 필자는 1910년대 중반 이후 신지식인층 일반에 유포되었던 창조충동, 새로운 문화를 건설하려는 충동을 시대정신으로서의 낭만적 정신으로 규정하고자 한다. 시대정신으로서의 낭만적 정신이 한국 근대문학의 형성 과정에서 수행했던 역할에 대한 보다 엄밀한 천착이 이루어진다면, 지금까지 한국 근대문학의 특질을 검토하는 자리에서 이루어졌던 계보화 작업들 예컨대, 한국 문학의 특정한 한 시기나 세대 의식 혹은 문학 경향을 계몽/탈계몽의 시대, 리얼리즘/모더니즘적 경향, 근대/반근대 지향 등의 구도로 구획 짓는 작업 방식에서 벗어날 수 있는 가능성의 영역이 열릴 것이라고 판단된다. 근대문학과 관련해서 낭만주의에 대한 새로운 논의의 필요성이 대두되는 것은 이 때문이다. 1910년대 중반 이후 등장한 신지식인층은 서구적인 논리에 입각한 정치체제로서의 ‘국가’의 수립 가능성이 봉쇄된 지점에서 ‘국가’와 ‘물질’이라는 실체 개념의 대립항으로 ‘민족’과 ‘정신’이라는 추상 개념을 내세운다. 이로써 그들은 서구와 일본과의 대등한 위치를 확보할 수 있는 가능성을 발견하는데, 그것이 창조충동으로 요약되는 신문화 건설의 욕망이다. 신문화 건설 주체는 이러한 창조충동의 실현 가능성을 예술의 영역에서 발견한다. 그들은 예술의 영역을 발견하고자 할 뿐 아니라 예술과 삶의 합일을 추구하고자 하는데, 그 까닭은 예술의 영역이 실제의 현실보다 우월한 세계를 상상적으로 구축할 수 있는 가능성을 제공해주는 공간이고 삶의 이상이 실현된 지점이기 때문이다. 예술과 삶의 거리, 내면세계와 외면세계의 거리에 대한 반응 양식에 따라 예술과 삶의 합일에의 충동은 유기적이고 완전한 세계에 대한 지향으로 드러나기도 하고 예술과 삶의 통합을 통해 소멸되는 파괴충동으로 드러나기도 한다. 낭만적 주체는 이러한 이중화의 역학 속에서 구성된다. 창조충동으로 충만해 있으면서도 고독한 낭만적 주체는 소설이 구축하는 세계를 통해서 그 모습을 드러낸다. 따라서 낭만적 주체의 형성 과정을 고찰하는 과정은 근대소설의 형성 과정에 대한 고찰이 될 것이며, 그러한 고찰 과정에서 조선적 의미의 낭만적 정신의 특질인 이중화 논리의 메커니즘이 파악될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
I'm rethinking about the relation of Korean modern novel and roman- ticism to do a plentiful study about the process of the formation of Ko- rean modern novel. The greaterpart of an learned man seem to think about romanticism as the trend of modern literature. As we argues in favor of romanticism in this way, we can't surmount of location of Ko- rean literature below European standard. Thus I'll prescribe romanticism not to the trend of modern literature but to the spirit of the times. Since the period of second half in 1910's, the new intellectual make an appear- ance in Korean intellectual society. They are dragged into the spirit of the times which is the desire of the invention and of the construction of the new culture. I'll supposed that the romantic spirit is the desire of the invention and of the construction of the new culture. The reason why the desire of the invention and of the construction of the new culture is the romantic spirit, it expresses in realm of art. Art is a territory that has been realized an ideal of life and that has been provided with potenti- ality that is able to establish a world which is superior to real reality through imagination. The desire of unity with art and life is based on the distance between art and life and the way that deals with the dis- tance between in and out world. Romantic subject has constructed in duplicative mechanism. Both the desire of invention and destruction form essential factors in the process of construction of Kore- an modern literature.
