Abstract

The rapid development of modern society has intensified environmental pollution and climatechange, and the amount of waste has increased exponentially due to the impact of theCOVID-19. As a result, consumers' purchasing patterns are changing in the direction ofpreferring eco-friendly products and emphasizing value consumption, and the textile designindustry is actively designing upcycled products that utilize waste, emphasizing the need todevelop sustainable materials and designs. Against this background, the purpose of this study isto examine the characteristics of upcycled textile materials and products currently utilized bydomestic brands, and to suggest the direction that the textile design industry should take in thefuture. The method of research is as follows. Firstly, the current status of the textile designindustry, consumer characteristics, and the size and characteristics of the domestic upcyclingmarket were analyzed through the announcements of domestic organizations, internet news, andinternational textile trend surveys. Secondly, based on the analysis of relevant previous papers inKorea, the types of upcycling brands were divided into three categories based on the materialsused: utilizing waste fabric, utilizing waste leather, and utilizing new materials developed bydecomposing and processing waste materials. Thirdly, selected two domestic brands using eachtype of material and examined their characteristics. According to the analysis, there were manycases of developing products using textile waste, but most of them used the waste as it is. Ifcompanies actively research to produce products that meet consumer needs and trends, and ifthe use of textile products processed from waste into new materials spreads, the domesticupcycling market will be more active. This research will serve as a foundation for thedevelopment and revitalization of the domestic upcycled textile industry, and related researchwill continue in the future.
