Abstract
This study aims to analyze the Buddhist semiotic in Han Kang's The Vegetarian. The core Buddhist doctrines, No Killing, Four Noble Truths, No-self theory, and Dependent Origination theory, are used as the criteria for interpretation. The first is No Killing. The title of the novel contains the precept not to kill life. The main character Young-hye's refusal to eat meat or any food, and taking off her brassiere correspond to the Buddhist attitude of criticizing the law of the jungle and valuing all living things. The second is the Four Noble Truths. Young-hye's life is suffering, and the cause is the guilt of destroying life. In order to be liberated, she practices shedding her human skin. From vegetarianism and fasting to absorbing sunlight, painting flowers on her body, and standing on her head, it takes years of training. With her consciousness clearly awake, she cultivates her mind and independently extinguishes her ego, gaining true freedom. Like a tree emitting flames, she radiates light and becomes a non-existent existence. Third is No-self theory. Young-hye, who innately exudes the energy of wild plants, dynamically transforms without a permanent substance. People around her and even herself feel unfamiliar with her. As all things in the world, Young-hye continues to change, and she approaches nirvana, realizing this principle. The fourth is Dependent Origination theory. Not only is the dogma applied to Young-hye’s life, but the people around her also form a causal relationship with her. Compared to her worldly husband, her brother-in-law and sister are more influenced by her. Young-hye’s self-harm raises the question of what life is, and they are anguished. The dreams of Young-hye stimulate them even more, and as a result, her brother-in-law fails to control his desires, and her sister restricts her urges to the extreme. In either case, they are mere sentient beings who cannot find the middle path. The significance of this paper is that it provides an explanation of the novel The Vegetarian using religious semiotic. Further examination of Korean literary works and other works of art using Korean semiotic, is suggested.
