Abstract
In Goryeo, the Gungwon system for Hubi was managed to bestow a detached independent palace and economic foundation on Hubi, the spouses of kings, and assign palace officials to them. This study was conducted to examine the exact year when the Gungwon system for Hubi was implemented and the changes it underwent for its organization. The Gungwon system for Hubi first came into effect under the unique situation of early Goryeo. Before it, women in the royal family of Silla might have owned a Gungwon, but there were no cases in which the spouses of kings owned a Gungwon. In early Goryeo, Hubi was called Bu-in or Won-bu-in, starting in the reign of King Taejo. These titles were not in name only, but they were on the premise of owning a Gungwon outside the palace. In fact, Lady Kim, who was King Taejo's wife and called Daeseowon-bu-in, received Daeseowon while another Lady Kim, who was another wife of King Taejo and called Soseowon-bu-in, received Soseowon. The Gungwon system for Hubi was actually implemented for the realistic reason that the main palace was small in the early days of Goryeo. During the reign of King Taejo, the main palace was not equipped fully for a royal palace in the situations involving the early stage of the country's foundation and the war for the unification of the Three Kingdoms. The main palace could not accommodate the Hubis that the king received through marriage of convenience. The government recognized a need for places where the Hubis that came to Gaegyeong to marry King Taejo could stay and accordingly bestowed a Gungwon on them. The Gungwon system for Hubi was organized during the reigns of King Gyeongjong-King Mokjong. There were changes to the names of Gungwons during this period. During the reigns of King Taejo-King Gwangjong, Gungwons for Hubi were named after place names associated with the Hubis like Hwangjuwon. Since the reign of King Gyeongjong, all the Gungwons for Hubi received names as a palace that became Ahwa like Myeongbokgung. These changes happened as the names of Gungwons were changed to fit their status as a "detached independent palace of the royal family" after a shift in the nature of Gungwons for Hubi from an actual residence to a detached independent palace of the royal family during the reign of King Gwangjong. During the years of King Mokjong, they made the first government position for Gungwons. Palace officials first appeared in the records during the years of King Mokjong, but the system of palace officials must have been implemented during the years of King Seongjong at the latest to manage the economic power of Gungwons comprehensively and prevent them from turning into a political force in the process of establishing a centralized power system. These findings indicate that the Gungwon system was organized during the reigns of King Gyeongjong-King Mokjong and that the titles of Gungju and Wonju appeared during the reign of King Hyeonjong as an extension.
