The Parallel Style in the Report of the CCP Congress

This paper pays attention to the parallel style in documents of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party(CCP). The style, called “Pianti(駢體)”, can be traced back to the Wei-JIn(魏晉) dynasty and marked by couplets(對偶), rhythm(聲律), and allusion(典故). Through the analysis of the report of the CCP Congress, this paper shows that three features of “Pianti” become more and more outstanding in documents of the Central Committee of the CCP. Furthermore, the author argues that the tendency of “Pianti” follows the logic of cumulation. In other words, the tendency of “Pianti” is getting stronger in a way that summarize the previous sentences briefly or add a new phrase to the old one. This suggests that a training should be required to read and write the report of the CCP Congress.
