Abstract
To cultivate competency for an uncertain future society, the ideology of “Here-Now–Our Lives” characterizes the 2022 revised integrated curriculum, which emphasizes post-disciplinary, theme-based integration and a learner-centered curriculum that fosters future competencies, and a direction organically connecting individual experiences with the community. This revision reflects critical reassessment of traditional, knowledge-based curricula’s limitations and their integrated education approaches. Specifically, fragmented knowledge education has been found limited for helping learners understand and apply integrated life experiences. Throughout history, knowledge has been regarded as formal education’s most important component, but the disconnect between knowledge and life, as well as issues regarding integration of knowledge, have consistently been subjects of discussion not only in education but also in various academic fields. Additionally, Wilson’s concept of “consilience” highlights fragmented knowledge’s limitations and advocates unified knowledge centered on scientific inquiry. However, this perspective also has limitations because it disregards unique forms of thinking and conceptual frameworks inherent in disciplines other than science by implying that the world can be understood only through scientific exploration. In contrast, Oakeshott’s concept “information and judgment” presents a new perspective on integration. Imparting judgment―tacit dimension of knowledge―through instructing information―explicit dimension of knowledge―demonstrates how individuals can develop perspectives for understanding the world. Oakeshott’s discussion opens the possibility of interpreting integration in curriculum theory not as horizontal connections between educational content but as vertical connections, offering a deepened approach to knowledge integration.
