Abstract

This study explores the essential communication barriers faced by people with hearing impairments in accessing dental care and seeks practical solutions through the application of design thinking methodology within a Study-Life Integration (SLI) course framework. Using purposive sampling, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with dental professionals and sign language interpretation experts. The collected data were analyzed according to Colaizzi’s phenomenological method to capture the core experiences and perspectives of the participants. The analysis revealed that dental care avoidance among people with hearing impairments is primarily driven by ‘structural anxiety’ arising from information gaps and unpredictable treatment processes. Current ad-hoc communication strategies in dental settings have proven insufficient, leading to persistent psychological barriers and diminished patient autonomy. Participants expressed a strong need and high expectations for systematic, visually oriented communication tools to make dental procedures more predictable and reduce patient anxiety. Moreover, the study emphasizes that for such communication tools to be effective in practice, standardized manuals and comprehensive policy support are required, including the development of universal guidelines and patient-customized communication systems. This research empirically demonstrates that the challenges in dental care for people with hearing impairments are predominantly rooted in socio-psychological accessibility rather than just physical or economic barriers. Furthermore, it confirms that design thinking is an effective methodology for developing innovative, user-centered solutions for complex healthcare challenges. Based on these findings, this study proposes the adoption of visual communication tools in dental clinics, the establishment of patient-preference-based communication systems, and the formulation of institutional policies and standard guidelines to support barrier-free dental care environments. The results have practical significance for advancing health equity for vulnerable populations and offer educational implications for integrative, problem-based learning in health and social care.
