Abstract

Blue tile is recognized as splendid, extravagant and labor-intensive building material, thus it was limitedly used in Joseon Dynasty. Even in the royal palace which is a symbol of the kingship, the records show that blue tile was used only in a royal audience hall or side room. In addition, the only remaining building with blue tile is Seonjeongjeon in Changduk Palace. However a closer examination of the records reveals that an attempt was made to use blue tile for Chimjeon, palace door or Gyeonghoeru in Gyeongbok Palace. Moreover it was ordered to use blue tile for Inyangjeon and Myeongjeongjeon in Changgyeong Palace. In particular, pieces of blue tile were discovered in Chimjeon in Gyeongbok Palace, thus it is assumed that the blue tile was used here contrary to the records. In the late Joseon, it was confirmed that three buildings with blue tiles were built in Ingyeong Palace during the palace construction by Gwanghaegun. They were demolished under the reign of Injo and subsequently rebuilt as Seonjeongjeon and Gyounghungak in Changduk Palace and Tongmeongjeon in Changgyeong Palace. During the reign of Gwanghaegun, yellow tile was manufactured and it was considered as a symbol to represent the royal power along with the blue tile. Apart from the palaces, blue tile was used in Buddhist temples affiliated with the royal palace such as Wongak temple, Bongsun temple, Zangwi temple and scenic spots visited by the king such as Tangchun pavilion and Tangchundae long corridor in the early Joseon. According to the records, blue tile was used in Guanwang shrine and Yeongeunmun in the late Joseon. Inspite of the negative recognition of the blue tile in Joseon, it was considered as extravagant, beautiful and symbolic for the royal power and used accordingly in reality.
