The Competition Model Revisited: A Functionalist Approach to Language Learning

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to revisit the tenets of the competition model and reexamine the empirical studies conducted under this model. The competition model takes a functionalist approach to language acquisition, which claims that language acquisition arises from the need to communicate and that the pragmatic need for communication determines the form appropriate to the intentions. Research undertaken within the competition model is primarily concerned with the transfer of first language (L1) processing strategies to second language (L2) sentence interpretation and attempts to relate the use of appropriate L2 processing strategies to L2 proficiency. The assumptions of the competition model and the research methodologies used within this paradigm, however, deserve reconsideration. The present paper raises some questions as to the adequacy of the competition model approach to account for language acquisition and to investigate the L2 learner's interlanguage system. It points out the problems with the basic tenets of the model and the empirical studies carried out under the competition model framework.
