Abstract

This study aimed to explore ways to support infants in smoothly adapting to daycare centers, which represent new environments for them, after being raised at home since birth. It sought to clarify the meaning of infants’ experiences in the entrance hall, the very first space they encounter upon arriving at daycare. Seven new infants aged 1 to 2 years attending a public daycare center in W City, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, were selected as research participants. Their arrival at the entrance was observed for 9 weeks using both participant and non-participant observation methods. Multidisciplinary data, including video observation transcripts, field notes, and parent interview transcripts, were collected and analyzed qualitatively. The findings revealed, first, that infants encountered engaging mediators that fostered familiarity with the unfamiliar environment. These included, playing with the doorbell interesting with bright and natural design elements, finding their own shoe rack to organize their shoes, and noticing visually appealing installations. Second, infants received cooperative support from caregivers and teachers, including caregivers encouraging them from behind, teachers guiding them from the front, and collaborative interactions between the two. Third, infants engaged in emotional regulation toward attachment figures, such as bringing comfort objects, recognizing separation situations, expressing anxiety and sadness about separation, and voluntarily entering the daycare space. These results suggest that daycare directors and teachers need to recognize the importance of the entrance hall’ s meaning for infants and strengthen its configuration, while fostering infants’ self-regulation capabilities.
