Abstract
This study examines how the body metaphors of Sijo, particularly those involving ganjang(肝腸, liver-intestines), render emotion as events that unfold inside the body. Sijo education has long reduced emotion to abstract labels, leaving learners little opportunity to experience its language through the body. Drawing on three frameworks—conceptual metaphor and image schema, affect theory and visceral perception, and the East Asian conception of the body—this paper analyzes the rotting, melting, severing, and burning of ganjang in four Sijo works, grouped into internal transformation and bodily threshold. The body metaphors of Sijo render emotion as an event within the body: mediated by the same organ, they nonetheless diverge into distinct events according to the direction and mode of affect. Learner responses suggest that these metaphors can be reconstructed through learners’ own sensory experience and the culturally grounded bodily conception embedded in Korean. On this basis, the study proposes a direction for Sijo education that guides learners to trace the unresolved workings of affect and interpret these metaphors through their own bodies and cultural sensibility.
