제4차 교육과정기에 있었던 텍스트 이해 중심의 시 교육은 많은 비판에도 불구하고 여전히 시 교육의 한 지류로 존재하고 있다. 이 연구는 이 시기 시 교육의 주요 경향과 구조를 분석하고 그것의 현재적 의미를 도출하는 데 목적을 둔다. 널리 알려진 분석주의와 정전주의 외에 당시의 다른 면모들을 보이는 것이 이 연구의 주요 과제이다. 대상 자료는 해당 시기의 교육과정, 교과서, 대학입학학력고사 문항이다. 제4차 교육과정기 시 교육은 작품 읽기의 층위에 분석주의뿐 아니라 구조론과 정신주의가 함께 놓여 있었다. 구조론은 텍스트 전체를 하나의 의미 구조로 상정하고 그 짜임새를 탐구하는 경향을 뜻한다. 상급 학년에서 선언적인 명제로 강조되지만 학습자의 실질적인 수행으로 연결되지는 못한 미완의 기획이었다. 정신주의는 텍스트의 심층에 어떤 정신적인 지향이나 가치가 깃들어 있다고 보고 그것을 파악하는 데 주력하는 경향을 가리킨다. 표면에 부각되었던 국가․민족 이데올로기 외에 존재의 본질, 물질문명에 대한 대안 세계 등이 그 주제였으며, 이들은 대체로 학습자들이 직접 대면하는 교육 자료의 이면에 잠복해 있었다. 구조론은 빈틈없는 유기적 완결성이라는 경직된 이상을, 정신주의는 제한적인 시 정신의 일방적 전수를 고수한다는 문제를 안고 있었다. 그러나 짧지 않은 역사를 가진 이들 경향은 시의 형식과 내용에 관한 나름의 설명력을 바탕으로 시 교육에서 잔존해 왔으며, 향후에도 쉽게 폐기되지 않을 것으로 예상된다. 따라서 이들의 부정적인 면모를 지양하고 시 교육의 최근 지향들과 어울릴 수 있도록 하는 큰 폭의 재구성이 요청된다. 이를 위해 귀착점으로서의 구조 대신 잠정적이고 유연한 구조의 구성 과정을 다룰 것, 고고한 정신 대신 공동체에 잠복해 있던 사유로서의 시 정신들의 공동 투사를 보장할 것을 제안하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the major trends and structure of poetry education during the 4th National Curriculum period and to derive its contemporary significance. During this period, poetry education incorporated not only analytical approaches but also theory of structure and mentalism into the process of reading works. Theory of structure refers to the tendency to view the entire text as a single semantic structure and to explore its composition. Although emphasized as a declarative proposition in upper grades, it remained an unfinished project that failed to translate into concrete student performance. Mentalism refers to the tendency to view the text as imbued with certain spiritual orientations or values at its core and to focus on identifying them. This was an underlying agenda that was more prominent in teacher’s guides than in the materials students actually encountered. This study proposed ways to leverage these trends through significant variations.
