Abstract
This study aims to elucidate the agency of literary education Karen Barad’s theory of agential realism, and to propose ‘reader position’ as an analytical apparatus of ‘agential cut’ to capture the literary practices of learning readers. According to agential realism, humans and non-humans are inherently entangled, and relata emerge only temporarily through agential cuts. On this theoretical ground, the agency of literary education is defined as a phenomenon in which already entangled various elements—such as texts, authors, learning readers, teachers, and classrooms—ceaselessly emerge as relata through specific agential cuts. In this process, the learning reader, as an agent, performs agential cuts through the act of ‘doing literature’ (literary practice). Rather than being a one-time event, this performance is iteratively enacted, allowing elements to be continuously re-signified and reconfigured. To identify and educate this process within the educational field, this study introduces the concept of ‘reader position.’ Reader position serves as a practical unit of the temporary agential cut enacted by the learning reader in literary reading, as well as an analytical apparatus to capture the reader's agency in education. The case analysis of learning readers demonstrates that they visualize pre-existing entanglements by traversing multiple positions, or practice new possibilities of entanglement through the emergence of novel reader positions. Based on these discussions, this study argues that agency-based, reader-centered literary education should be designed in a way that visualizes entanglements and fulfills ethical response-ability through new apparatuses of re-configurating material-discursive practices.
