Abstract
This study analyzes the respective structures of the poem and the song, as well as the integration patterns of their literary and musical frameworks, in the Korean art song Gagopa(lyrics by Lee Eun-sang and music by Kim Dong-jin). Furthermore, it examines the educational significance of the holistic artistic experience derived from engaging with the work through this structural perspective. As one of Korea's most beloved art songs, Gagopa stands at the intersection of the literary achievement of the early twentieth-century Sijo Revival Movement and the musical achievements of establishing a distinctively Korean art song tradition. In this ten-stanza linked sijo, Lee employs the imagery of the ‘sea’ and ‘companions’ to evoke both youthful innocence and a longing for one's hometown, while offering an ironic reflection on life by demonstrating the impossibility of returning to one's “naked self” amid a harsh reality symbolized by “cold ice and harsh winds.” Concurrently, Kim developed a distinctive musical interpretation of the literary text through an art song composed in two parts(Gagopa Part 1 and Part 2) over a span of forty years; in doing so, he secured the organic unity of the work by utilizing three fundamental rhythmic patterns and variations of the [mi–fa–mi–re–do] motif that permeate both sections. In particular, the cyclical tonal modulations and irregular metrical shifts in Part 2 can be regarded as an artistic endeavor to embody the breathing patterns of traditional Korean music within a Western melodic idiom. Through the convergence of literary and musical structures, Gagopa overcomes the structural dissonance arising from the clash between the traditional tripartite structure of sijo and Western musical phrasing. This resolution is achieved through the rearrangement of lyrics, the contrapuntal integration of text and melody, and the double repetition of the seventh stanza. On this basis, appreciators of the work(encompassing readers, singers, and audiences) come to recognize the deeper theme of ‘regret and lamentation’ underlying the surface theme of ‘nostalgia.’ Such an aesthetic experience enables learners to approach artistic works, including literature, in a more multifaceted manner. Ultimately, this study provides a foundation for diversifying modes of poetic appreciation and refining a holistic model of aesthetic experience that effectively incorporates musical elements into literary education.
