Abstract

This study analyzes how perceptions of care values and gender-equal care influence perceived community resilience, drawing on survey data from 1,000 residents of Daegu, South Korea. Results from hierarchical multiple regression show that both perception variables had significant positive effects on community resilience, while the effects of sociodemographic factors were generally limited. Interaction effects by gender revealed that gender-equal care perception served as a positive factor enhancing resilience among men, whereas care value perception exerted a negative effect for male respondents. These findings suggest that gender norms shaped by the feminization of care and the gendered division of labor mediate the perception effects in differential ways. In addition, households with a monthly income KRW 3 million showed significantly lower levels of perceived resilience, confirming that economic vulnerability undermines resilience formation. This study has certain limitations in that it relies on data confined to Daegu and on a ‘Perceived Community Resilience Index’ based on respondents’ subjective evaluations. Nevertheless, the study provides empirical evidence linking perceptions of care values and gender-equal care with community resilience. In conclusion, it proposes reconceptualizing community resilience not merely as physical infrastructure but as a sociocultural capacity grounded in gender justice and care justice.
