이 글은 청소년 소설의 대표격인 『호밀밭의 파수꾼』을 관계성 관점에서 새롭게 읽는 것이다. 퇴학 위기에 처한 주인공 홀든이 집에 가기 전 3 일간을 뉴욕에서 보내면서 겪게 되는 다양한 인간관계를 통해 스스로에대한 인식을 높이게 되었다는 점에 착안해 관계성 이론에 입각해 작품을 분석하고자 하였다. 관계에 따른 역할 등이 중요한 의미를 띠는 바, 어떤 상황이나 사건이발생했을 때 헤겔의 정-반-합의 원칙을 적용해 홀든의 성장일기를 추적해보려 했다. 학교에서의 관계를 우선 살펴보면, 홀든은 선생님들과 좋은 관계를 맺기 어려운 부분이 있었다. 선생들의 왜곡된 시각, 정상적으로 성장하지 못한 부족한 면모 등 홀든에게 좋은 영향을 끼치기 어려운점이었다. 또한 친구들과의 관계를 살펴볼 때, 홀든을 괴롭히는 스트라드레이터는 자신의 글쓰기 숙제를 대신하도록 종용할 정도였고, 애클리는 정신적 교감을 이루기에는 부족함이 많은 친구였다. 특히 호텔에서만난 모리스와 써니는 돈을 착취하고, 폭력까지 행사한 부류로, 인생에서 만나지 않아도 될 존재들이라 할 만큼 밑바닥 인생을 살고 있는 추악한 대상이라 할 수 있을 정도다. 그러한 여러 고비를 넘기며, 여동생 피비를 찾아간 홀든은 자신이 추구하는 삶의 지향점이 곧 “호밀밭을 지나다 누군가를 만나게 되면” 절벽에서 떨어지지 않게 붙잡아주는 파수꾼이 되는 것임을 알게 된다. 아이들의 순수함을 지켜주는 파수꾼이 되고 싶다는 목표지향점을 확인하는 것이 홀든에게 얼마나 큰 의미인가를 남긴다
Abstract
The Catcher in the Rye written by J.D.Salinger is the most widely adopted young adult literature in the United States, as well as many countries, as a representative literature. This novel is one of salient sources for examining the meanings of relatedness and role relationships. In particular, It is important to carefully examine the various relationships the protagonist forms at school and within the family to see how these relationships contribute to the protagonist's growth and inner maturity. The main focus of this study is to explore the meaning and results of the protagonist's three day rebellious journey and the importance of the relationships with the members of the surrounding society on the protagonist’s growth and change of consciousness. Like relatioships with friends, even in his relationship with his teacher, there is no solid relationship that shows that he has not met a trustworthy adult. The most meaningful relationship for the protagonist is located in his family relationships, revealing the bond between brother Allie and sister Phoebe. In this context, this study tried to examine how to interpret the mirror image and ideal self-image represented and realized through role relationships.
