Abstract

This study examines how the elements and reception of the Hallyu have changed since its inception over 30 years ago as it has spread beyond Asia to the rest of the world. Using the Japanese drama Eye Love You (2024) as a case study, we summarize the positioning and conceptualization of the Hallyu in the 2020s and examine its ‘hybridity’. While the Hallyu of the 1990s referred to the spread and acceptance of popular culture produced in Korea, mainly in Asia, the Hallyu of the 2020s encompasses a wider range of meanings and categories. In particular, Japan, which began to embrace Korean cultural contents in the early 2000s, has been experiencing the changes of the Hallyu for 30 years. Japanese cultural content has been transformed by the Hallyu. The scope of Hallyu in Japan has greatly expanded, and the generation that embraces it has also expanded. In addition, Hallyu elements are heavily utilized in Japanese dramas as components and devices in the drama. This is manifested in a variety of ways, including dialog, scenes, and characterization. In particular, the Japanese public actively embraces Korean representations. The recurring use of Hallyu elements shows that the Japanese public’s interest in dramas has helped to spread Korean culture in general. In other words, dramas have been used as a tool to make Hallyu elements more acceptable. This shows that the audience is not just watching cultural content, but intends to expand it into their own experiences. This has had a significant impact on Korean tourism and the Korean economy. In conclusion, the Japanese public’s perceptions and feelings about Korea have also changed.
