This study aims to determine the meaning and semantic function of the conjunctive ending ‘-지’(-ji). To achieve this goal, drawing a distinction between the meaning and the semantic function of the conjunctive ending ‘-지’(-ji) is necessary. The semantic function should be determined by what function an antecedent clause does for a following clause. Unlike the semantic function, the meaning of the conjunctive ending ‘-지’(-ji) should be determined by an antecedent clause in the context of the utterance. By using the methodology discussed above, this study found that the meaning of the conjunctive ending ‘-지’(-ji) is ‘oughtness,’ and the clause with ‘-지’(-ji) semantic functions as the basis for the following clause. Those findings in this study are meaningful in that they provide an opportunity to reconsider the meaning of the conjunctive ending ‘-지’(-ji), such as ‘contrast’ and ‘expatiation,’ that have been considered as common interpretations in previous studies.
