Abstract

Yi Sang is one of the most important poet in Korean Modern Literature. But his works are known as being very difficult and many of them are remained incomprehensible. There are two kinds of works of Yi sang. Some are comprehensive, and the others are beyond understanding. It is necessary to focus on the former that allow us resonable interpretation. This thesis insist that many of Yi sang's poems can be understood by a sensible reasoning. 「Titled for Soyoung」and 「Self-portrait」are two of them for example. 「Titled for Soyoung」 describe the frustration and suffering of one whose lover is untruthful. 「Self-portrait」 shows us the portrait of Yi Sang who experience the confusion of identity. In both poems, a metaphor works very a important role. Metaphor is said the essence of poetry. Yi Sang made full use of unique and excellent metaphors that lead us to understand his poems. It can be said that the meaning and the attraction of Yi Sang's poem largely depends on the metaphor. Yi Sang is a genius in metaphor. In addition to, Yi Sang's unique metaphoric imagination is connected with the modern civilization. The vehicle of Yi Sang' metaphor always comes from the experience of modern urban life. This make his poem really modern as well as unique. This character of Yi Sang's metaphor can be confirmed by the preceding discuss on 「Titled for Soyoung」 and 「Self-portrait」.
