베르그손의 시간론을 통해 본 프루스트의 「스완네 집 쪽으로」: 질적 연속체로서 ‘지속’ 개념에서 감각 작용과 기억의 상호침투성을 중심으로

이 논문은 베르그손의 시간론, 즉 시간의 이질성과 주관성을 함축하는 질적 연속체의 속성을 지닌 ‘지속’ 개념과 프루스트의 소설 「스완네 집 쪽으로」에서 전개되는 시간을 상호 연관 지어 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 베르그손은 지속의 특성을 불가분의 연속성에 있다고 주장하며, 과거와 현재의 연속성 문제를 시간론에서 다룬다. 이에 따라, 필자는 베르그손의 시간론과 프루스트의 소설에서 제기되는 시간성 문제를 다음의 두 가지 측면을 중심으로 고찰하고자 한다. 첫째, 베르그손이 시계적 시간(양적 연속체)과는 상반된 의미로 상정하고 있는 ‘지속’이란 무엇이며, 베르그손의 지속은 어떻게 과거의 기억을 현재에 실현시키는가? 둘째, 베르그손의 철학은 프루스트의 문학에서 말하는 시간의 비선형성과 어떤 연관성을 지니며, 과연 감각 작용과 기억의 상호침투적 관계성이란 무엇인가? 이상의 두 가지 문제에 관한 고찰의 결과로, 필자는 베르그손의 철학과 프루스트의 문학이 유동성, 감각 작용, 기억이라는 시간을 둘러싼 문제를 상호 공유하고 있고, 베르그손의 시간론이 「스완네 집 쪽으로」의 독해에 유효한 철학적 관점임을 주장할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to read Proust’s novel Swann’s Way based on Bergson’s conception of time which emphasis duration(durée) is regarded as same as qualitative continuum implied the features of heterogeneity and subjectivity of time experience. Bergson’s thinking is focused on the problem of how to draw a distinction between past and present whilst recognizing the indivisible continuity of durational time. In the text, I will deal with Bergson’s theory of time and Proust’s temporality issues focusing on two questions as below: (1) What Bergson explains ‘duration’ in contrast to clock time(quantitative continuum)? And, in this point, how duration makes realization about past memory in present? (2) Discuss on the non-linearity time in Bergson’s philosophical treatment and Proust’s literature, what is the interrelation between affection and memory? Finally, I will present there is a possible link between Bergson and Proust because the concerned with the problems of time as flux, affection and memory, moreover Bergson’s theory of time suggest philosophical view to read Swann’s Way.
