Abstract
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) exemplify algorithmic agents, where invisible computational decisions manifest in socially consequential ways. As such, they provide a revealing site for examining how people perceive and ethically evaluate algorithmic agents. This study investigates how ethical evaluations of AV stakeholders (users, manufacturers, and lawmakers) vary depending on collision algorithm (selfish vs. utilitarian) and vehicle type (personal vehicle vs. taxi). An online experiment was conducted in which participants were presented with accident scenarios where an AV either prioritized the safety of its passenger (selfish) or the safety of a greater number of road users (utilitarian) in a fatal situation. The results revealed that utilitarian algorithms elicited more positive ethical evaluations across all stakeholder groups, suggesting that the influence of collision algorithms on ethical evaluations extends beyond AV users to encompass manufacturers and lawmakers. Furthermore, vehicle type moderated the following effects. Personal AVs elicited stronger ethical evaluations—both positive and negative—than autonomous taxis. Overall, the findings enhance our understanding of public perceptions of AVs as algorithmic agents, offering practical implications for the social acceptance of AV technologies.
