Abstract
This study empirically investigates how the perceived severity of errors in autonomous vehicles(AVs) influences ethical evaluations of the manufacturer and the user, and explores the indirect impact of these ethical evaluations on the intention to adopt AVs. We conducted an online experiment where an AV either commits a fatal or minor error, and asked participants to ethically evaluate the manufacturer and the user, and their intention to accept AVs. The results showed that fatal errors significantly reduced the intention to accept AVs compared to minor errors and negatively influenced ethical evaluation of the manufacturer. In contrast, ethical evaluation of the user was not significantly affected by error severity. The multiple parallel mediation analysis revealed that only ethical evaluation of the manufacturer significantly mediated the relationship between error severity and intention to accept AVs. These findings suggest that when AVs cause fatal errors, ethical blame is likely to be directed toward manufacturers, and such negative evaluations may adversely affect the acceptance of the technology. The study demonstrates that ethical evaluation can serve as a key factor in the widespread adoption of AVs.
