Abstract
-Purpose:This study examined the association between oral contraceptive use and mental health, focusing on anxiety and depression, using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. It also explored factors associated with these two mental health indicators. -Methods:A total of 9,156 women aged 19–59 years were included after excluding missing data. Anxiety and depression were measured using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), respectively; scores ≥10 were classified as high-risk. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed adjusting for age, marital status, parity, income, education, BMI, smoking, high-risk drinking, and walking practice. -Results:Oral contraceptive use was significantly associated with both anxiety (OR=1.60, p=0.001) and depression (OR=1.61, p=0.001). For anxiety, older age and regular walking were protective factors, whereas lower income, obesity, current smoking, and high-risk drinking were associated with increased risk. For depression, older age, higher education, and regular walking were protective factors, whereas lower income, obesity, current smoking, and unmarried status were associated with increased risk. -Conclusion:Oral contraceptive use was significantly associated with both anxiety and depression. These findings suggest that oral contraceptive use should be considered not only in reproductive health management but also in the assessment of women’s mental health. Among Korean women, mental health status should be considered during contraceptive counseling and prescribing, and follow-up may be warranted for those with suspected emotional vulnerability.
